Woah. My first post in 2017 will coincidentally be post #300 on the blog. That's pretty cool. Anyway, there are some writings I want to get to right away, but I also wanted to start off the year simple. Here's a blog post that will gloss over what are my hopeful wishes for Kpop in 2017. Like some of my other posts, these will range from somewhat realistic to "please I'd give up my left leg if this happens." I can think of no other way to kick off 2017 with these lighthearted thoughts.
Girl Group Dominance
While I may be a girl group favoritist (because that's totally a word) and expert, there's no denying that for the most part, the most consistent groups have been the boy groups. Big Bang, BTS, EXO, and company have enjoyed sustainable success to another level that girl groups either don't have (yet). Anyway, I'm hoping this will change because if girl groups could release music as frequently and on the level of say, BTS' resume? That'd be fucking sweet. We have seen glimpses of the future as Twice, Red Velvet, and Black Pink have essentially taken over as the flagship girl group of their respective companies. I think they will find that these positions suit them well.
Rise Of Subunits
2016 saw the beginning and return of some notable subunits, namely AOA Cream for the former and Bastarz for the latter. While the songs promoted by these various subunits ranged from decent to outstanding, it couldn't be helped to reminisce on some old subunits who have yet to return, as well as brand new subunits to spice things up. Dasoni and Sistar19 are subunits from staple girl groups who could use a renewal, though Dasoni is unlikely to happen what with (a) EXID having a full group comeback and (b) Solji's health issues, which are putting said group comeback on hold anyway. As for new subunits, I've talked about a few ideas before which would be cool.
New Solo Ventures
Turns out most of these topics are relatively plausible. Or at least, they should be in theory. Hello, I'm still waiting on Minzy to make her solo debut? When is this happening I'm getting desperate. Also I recall an ex-KARA member by the name of Nicole? Is she never coming back or is her Instagram activity all we're going to have now. After the likes of Subin and Eunji, there are other members overdue for solo efforts. There are some obvious names, for example, Seohyun from Girls' Generation (despite rumors of Hyoyeon being next) as well as Soyeon from T-ARA (though a Jiyeon solo comeback would be nice, too). Soyu, Hana, etc. The list is endless.
Controversy Stock Plummets
Granted, most of this year's troubling news was due to disbanding groups, but there was plenty of important and stupid controversies for all groups involved that popped up throughout the year. And double granted something like this is impossible to avoid what with Dispatch and journalists trying to get the latest scoop, and crazy anti-fans causing shit, but hey a rational normal fan can but dream. I hope that groups of all ages and sizes can stay healthy and out of trouble, as much as possible.
(After) School Is Back
Because surely Pledis will be doing something with After School and not let four fucking years of inactivity be their end note, right?
