[Review] Girl's Day - I'll Be Yours

It only took an eternity, but Girl's Day are finally back. From their previous spot as the #1 girl group to being clouded in inactivity (music-wise), they've suffered trying times since their last release "Ring My Bell" was underwhelming in many aspects. Not to fear though because "I'll Be Yours" teased some of the Girls' Day power that we love: classic visuals, sexy choreo, and Minah's wonderful voice. How do they during these promotions will be critical because so many other (new) girl groups are rising and rising fast.
This chorus is underratedly good. I don't think "underratedly" is a word but whatever. It's powerful and emphatic, and the repetition of "I'll be yours" isn't as grating as it could be given how many times they say this line. Of course, the killer punch is Minah's run at the end which is all sorts of wonderful. In fact, everything that Minah does in this song is really good: verses, chorus, bridge, and final run. Give me all of it! Sojin is also really impressive playing second fiddle to Minah, and it's more of praise to Sojin than it is a knock on Minah. Furthermore, Yura and Hyeri each receive a significant portion of each verse (and parts of the bridge) and it's their best showing as support vocalists to date. Backed by the funky instrumental, "I'll Be Yours" is a fun jam that keeps momentum for most of the song.

Unfortunately, "I'll Be Yours" isn't without faults. This song can't escape some of the uncomfortable English that accompanies many songs. This is especially evident in the verses with random words scattered here and there. Random male voices and chanting is present like during "Ring My Bell" and I don't like it. Also, Yura has gone back to having really bad and uneventful raps. Considering that she had bursts of promise in "Ring My Bell" and the best rap in her history during "I Miss You," this is a step backwards. Awkward flow and it's generally quite forgettable. The song might have been better off without a rap. Thus, the plight of Yura as a rapper: short good raps or long bad raps. Or, they could let her do her "I Miss You" thing. Here's hoping this changes next time, and that we don't have to wait another two years for said next time.
Even though it's been forever, I can notice a fun Girl's Day dance when I see one. "I'll Be Yours" has hit that sweet spot of being fun and eye-pleasing, much more than dances of Girl's Day past. "Darling" was overloaded on the cuteness factor and "Ring My Bell" was too awkward (ignoring the incredible bicycle move of course). Speaking of, this dance utilizes the backup dancers pretty well. Throughout the various formation changes and the sitting parts all the backup dancers feel like an important part of the dance - something that isn't always true for most Kpop dances, and especially true for Girl's Day songs (think "Expectation" or "Something"). The choreography grows a little weak at the end with the leg-shaking thing they do but all in all this is a refreshing dance, both because we've not seen Girl's Day in a long time and because it's energetic in the right way.
Nothing too exciting here. This is your run-of-the-mill music video, full of close-ups, choreography shots, and general eye candy. Appearance-wise this might be the best Girl's Day have looked as a team since the days of "Expectation." The main reason for this is because Hyeri has finally grown out her hair and it looks beautiful. I'm not joking when I say that she looked better with long hair. I'm also not underselling the importance of uniformity. Everyone looks fabulous and Sojin continues to defy the aging process. This comeback alone might be enough to push her back into relevancy on my Bias List.

"I'll Be Yours" gave its MV a little too much caffeine because it's very jumpy. It's not on T-ARA levels of cuts but it does feel excessive. The colors are vibrant as expected of a Girl's Day song and their outfits during the choreography shots are quite flattering (a shame their live performance outfits aren't). I really enjoyed Hyeri and Yura's scenes: Hyeri being a champion boxer (while wearing a dress!) and looking badass, while Yura is playing a piano that's on fucking fire. I hope she was playing the right chords, too. That would give this MV so many bonus points - I love consistency and accuracy. Not to say I didn't like Sojin and Minah in the video (Sojin absolutely slays with glasses) but they were more fanservice and not as memorable. A fairly traditional Girl's Day MV, all things considered. Maybe even the best with Yura and Hyeri's parts.
Since it's been forever, I try to not let the Girl's Day drought cloud my opinions on this song, but it is good. Minah is absolutely divine, they all look amazing, and the choreography is one of their better showings. Yura's rap sucks and the MV is pedestrian but that makes "I'll Be Yours" a product that is a good song with small faults rather than a bad song with moments of glory. Doesn't matter if you promoted two months ago or two years ago, I'll always appreciate a solid song. Please don't make us wait another eternity before their next comeback!

[Review] CNBLUE - Between Us (Blitz)

Welp I've already failed the whole "write one Blitz per week" strategy but that doesn't mean I'm giving up. Anyway here's CNBLUE's newest release "Between Us." Right away I'm loving the song thanks to the combination of powerful instruments and Yonghwa's voice. This energy and intensity continues throughout the whole song with little to no stopping which is great. I'm always a fan of songs that can maintain tempo from start to finish - having too many jump cuts creates a disjointed sound (and we all know how I feel about those). Yonghwa probably isn't underrated but I think he deserves far more credit than what he usually gets, especially with bands not being common. The final stretch of "Between Us" is all sorts of wonderful. Unfortunately I'm predicting the word count for this piece to be less than the Twice one because there isn't too many interesting things going on in the MV. The whole thing is paired with a lot of black / dark backgrounds which doesn't allow for too much excitement. Other than various shots of the band rocking out and members on flip phones (LOL) there really is nothing going on. I almost didn't recognize Jonghyun, but I'm going to attribute that more to not seeing these guys in a long time than a drastic makeover or style change. "Between Us" makes me realize how much I've missed CNBLUE, and how much hope I have for other bands to keep going strong.

[Bonus] Best Of Individual Moments

You ever have those moments when you're watching or listening to something and the only reaction you have is "Wow." This post will mention a few of those moments I've experienced in Kpop. Think of this as a sort of highlight reel for individual members and awesome moments. Whether it's an amazing dance solo, or doing great in variety, there's plenty of opportunities for these types of things - maybe this will turn into a series? The list is randomized, and I selected an example from each gender for each, with links where appropriate.

Visual: Chanmi - Miniskirt
Before Hyejeong, Choa, and Seolhyun dominated with their visuals, there was Chanmi. "Miniskirt" was the first AOA song I discovered (bless) and Chanmi was beyond gorgeous in this MV. Her eyes are sparkling (even though I couldn't find a good still of her from the MV on Google) and although she may have changed her hair color soon after for "Short Hair" she still stuns in black. Glad she stuck with that over the years. Chanmi remains underrated for her looks due to the tough competition with other members.

Dance: Eunhyuk - Bonamana
I've never been a dancer, so it's fairly easy to impress me. However, back in the day this was even more true. The choreography to "Bonamana" was really the first song that made me want to learn it. More specifically, that dance break was nice and Eunhyuk was the center of attention for it. While that's to be expected given his position in Super Junior, the Kpop newbie in me simply saw a sick dance and he was in the middle. Despite lacking in comparison to recent dances, it still stands out even when I look back at it.

[Bonus] Best Of BTS

Unlike Twice, I have no qualms writing about BTS as the premier boy group in Kpop. They have the resume, roster, talent, and work ethic to back all of it up. Time for a Best Of, then! As it turns out I've only written one other Best Of for a group (9MUSES) since the 7th season - let's try and get more of these on a somewhat consistent basis. For BTS, I'm only going to consider their vast number of title tracks. While this will leave out heavy contenders like "Whalien 52" and "Born Singer," it'll even the playing field because I haven't dived into many of their B-sides.
7. We Are Bulletproof Pt.2
Bear with me on this one. Many people laughed at or dismissed BTS' debut material but there's a few reasons this track stands out. First, as always, the choreography is sweet and this was really the first song to emphasize the whole guns and shooting business. Second, it acts as a reminder to the image that BTS had back in their early days. Finally, Rap Monster's verse is disgustingly good (and was accompanied by the usual crowd). It is quite confusing how this was called part two though when part one didn't exist.
6. War Of Hormone
Despite the cringey title and cringier lyrics, the song itself is quite good and quite addicting. The instrumental is infectious and in hindsight a deviation from the trend of future BTS songs. "War Of Hormone" is highlighted by the casual yet entertaining choreography (and maybe even the style of the music video) along with V's growl during the chorus. The bridge is lackluster and the high note by Jungkook isn't as pretty as it could be, but in the grand scheme of things this is a solid piece.

[Review] TWICE - Knock Knock (Blitz)

I'm finally on break, though that shouldn't be an excuse (indeed isn't) for not having any new content lately. Don't trip, there is review stuff coming. ...hopefully. In the meantime I'm going to introduce this new subset of reviews called "Blitz(es)." Blitzes are essentially mini-reviews. Here are some guidelines I've made for myself regarding these reviews. First, they have to be started and completed in the same day. This prevents any procrastinating from lazy ol' me. Second, blitzes must alternate between boy and girl groups (or soloists) in order to further my desire to balance artist coverage on my blog. Third, they can only have a certain number of words - the whole point is for these to be bite-sized-ish. I haven't decided on the limit yet but we'll use the first few to test what I find comfortable or acceptable. These "restrictions" should allow me to write at least one Blitz a week, which means I'm at minimum going to write 3-4 pieces a month. Anyway here we go.

[Misc] Best Of Voices

Being busy and some creativity block has prevented me from going through the K.A.R.D review and something else planned to couple with it (sort of). So today I'm going to talk about my favorite voices in Kpop. As I strive for some more balance between boy and girl groups, I've selected ten members with quality voices (and not all of them are girl group members or the like). Now this isn't people with the strongest voice, or the best rapping voice - that would just be relegated for Power Ranking writing. These are the voices that I simply love listening to, for one reason or another. Usually the "Best Of" series is tagged under bonus material but I felt this was more in line with the miscellaneous stuff than anything else. Anyway let's dive in.

I.M
Deep voices are too cliche. But at the same time, they can be that charming. I didn't want to just go with someone like Yongguk or T.O.P. Instead I turned my attention to a relative unknown but one that made good first impressions from debut. Monsta X's I.M has a strong voice that's easily reflected in his rapping. He and Jooheon make a good 1-2 rapping punch for their group, though I think he needs to be utilized more. Even in repetitive lyrics like "Feedback," he was / sounded good. Not many people can do that.

Junsu
This is a throwback selection. I've not paid close attention to Junsu and 2PM for a long time, but Junsu is a spectacular vocalist that probably deserves more credit. They were one of the pioneer groups for me, and since debut Junsu has shown a propensity for great performances. Whether working within the group or by himself, he's got a unique sound that sounds perfect in R&B music. Come to think of it, I believe he had some new solo material recently. It's probably high time I check that out.

[Blog] The Argument For Subunits

Yeah, I know. Two consecutive blog posts, especially given the duration between posts is certainly unexciting. Even more dull (or annoying, depending on your perspective) is that I'm going to be talking about subunits again. The last time around I devised some subunits for girl groups I'd like to see, and that happened not too long ago. Do I feel cheap for doing so? Yes, but at the same time it's been busy busy busy for me (not to mention this is only the 7th overall blog post of this season) and this will be refreshing in some way. Upon closer inspection, I last wrote about subunits in November so it's not too bad.

[Blog] Wonder Girls & SPICA Bow Out

Welp. For once, delaying a post has some benefits. Originally I was going to write out my woes for the disbanding of Wonder Girls, but now with SPICA joining them I have more material, sort of. KARA was the first true girl group "titan" to fall, and now Wonder Girls joins them next. Even though the band concept gave them extra juice for another two promotion cycles, they'll call it quits after "Why So Lonely." Yubin and Hyelim will remain under JYP, while Yeeun and Sunmi are off to greener pastures. It's really unfortunate because not only were they enjoying success off the "Why So Lonely" mini, but they really had some momentum moving forward. Anyway, I'm curious to see what will come from Yubin and Hyelim remaining under JYP. Hopefully a Yubin solo is in the works, because that sounds amazing. As for Sunmi and Yeeun, both members have previously established themselves as capable soloists during their down years so I'm also excited to see what's in the store for them. Ideally neither will stray from the music path, and I don't think they'd be the ones to do so anyway. Looks like I won't be getting that Wonder Girls vs. AOA band battle after all.

[Review] CLC - Hobgoblin

I've been looking forward to this. With a title like "Hobgoblin," CLC were sure to catch attention no matter what the song sounded like. CLC had been attempting to carve out a niche for themselves with previous tracks like "No Oh Oh." But then you had the teaser, which clearly showed a departure from the classic CLC sound. Out go the traditional dance pop theme, in comes something more serious, potentially more badass. Lord knows we need more of these types of concepts for girl groups nowadays, so I was likely to welcome this change with open arms regardless of quality of song.
Granted, a darker mature theme only reminds me (and all of us) of 4minute, and that's exactly what "Hobgoblin" is. From the heavy usage of rap in the verses, melodic prechorus, and repetitive hook / chorus, everything is 4minute reincarnate. Before continuing on, I'd like to express my thoughts behind the "4minute cloning" matters. There could be different reasons why Cube pursued this path. Maybe previous songs weren't doing as well as they'd like. Maybe they're desperate to pick up where 4minute left off. Regardless, I for one enjoy this because it's a more niche market. Outside of Black Pink, who is ready going with the girl group power motif? 2NE1 and 4minute were the leading players in that field and both are gone. It's only natural for their successor groups to follow in their footsteps. Besides, there will be accusations of being copycats from all angles for all groups. It's simply water under the bridge.

[Review] Hello Venus - Mysterious

This is Hello Venus' debut on my blog. One of my goals this year (for my blog specifically) is to expand my comfort zones in terms of who I review. The first step would be to review more boy groups and soloists. The next step is the review the girl groups who don't get enough exposure. While it's still important for me to get the Sistars and Apink's of the world since that keeps me updated for future Power Ranking pieces, but it's high time I expand my tastes. Hello Venus' 2016 comebacks were rather quiet, but "Mysterious" proved to be a return to more exciting times.
Full disclosure: I haven't been fully acquainted with every member aside from Lime and Alice, but it's a work in progress. But for starters, nobody in Hello Venus will really "wow" you with their vocals. Yeah their individual voices aren't anything special but also their style of music rarely puts emphasis on it. Anyway, Alice is probably their best vocalist and she's pretty much average in every respect. Despite having said all that, Hello Venus are right at home in this kind of song. "Mysterious" is essentially a softer version of "Sticky Sticky," accompanied by a fun instrumental and the whistling hook that feels like it's everywhere.

[Review] AOA - Excuse Me

AOA is back after the disappointing "Good Luck," Japanese promotions, and hiding from controversy. We would be treated to double title tracks and contrary to what I normally do, I'm going to review what I think is the worse song (but it's not by much). if I was less lazy, I'd do a double review (I believe the only time this has ever happened was NCT) but we're already so late. Despite not including the song in Girl Group Power Rankings, I've now listened to this song enough times to have concrete opinions about it. Also new banners along with a new structure / setup, sort of!
Let's address the elephant in the room: this chorus is not very good. Or rather, the "baby cuse me cuse me" part. As far as I know, that isn't a real word and this usage is not appreciated. I understand it would sound very clunky to have "excuse me" repeated but it just straight up sounds bad the way it is. AOA's recent trend is to start the song off with a piece of the chorus (dating back to "Heart Attack") so that made me uncomfortable the whole rest of the way.

[Misc] Girl Group Visual Power Rankings Revisited

Why do I write the Visual Power Rankings? There are a variety of reasons. First it's because I've covered rapping, singing, group, and bias ranks before. Adding in visuals and appearances is not only appropriate given how the Kpop industry works, but also because it's another category to do some rank crunching. The only category I've yet to touch is dancing, but that's something that I can't even bullshit my way into writing even if I tried. Instead I may attempt a version of Girl Group Power Rankings where I focus on their choreographies, but that presents its own challenges: promotion material only, different career lengths, etc. Here are my picks for the most beautiful faces and members going into 2017.
12. Hyosung (-3) / 11. SinB (NEW) / 10. Tzuyu / 9. Suzy (-1)
Like Hwasa and Chorong on the Bias List, Hyosung falls to "last" but it's not her fault. Everyone else has stepped up. Speaking of, SinB makes her grand debut because she's the undisputed center of GFriend and combined with her focus during dancing keeps my eyes glued to her in performances. Tzuyu and Suzy represent the overwhelming lead visuals of their groups, even though the former has plenty of competition (Mina, Sana, etc.) and the latter is practically an actress at this point. Although Suzy is making her solo debut soon, so there's that to watch out for.

[Misc] Bias Power Rankings VII: Early 2017

Unlike the Girl Group Power Rankings from yesterday, the first installment of my Bias Power Rankings this year will include the most recent comebacks. Namely, AOA with "Bing Bing" and "Excuse Me," the latter of which will be reviewing sometime next week. Or soon. Hopefully soon. Anyway, here are my favorite Kpop girls after the wild whirlwind year of 2016.
Honorable Mentions: Seungyeon / Choa / Victoria / Sojin
Seungyeon makes her debut with the other honorable mentions for being the jack-of-all-trades in CLC. With AOA's comeback, I don't know how to feel about Choa's growing hair. Sometimes it looks elegant and other times very awkward. Victoria and Sojin are the older members of this list, and continue to stay in this range thanks to a lack of comebacks music-wise. I considered cutting out this section but at the same time it's nice to know who are the hopefuls looking to jump into the top 12.

[Bonus] Girl Group Power Rankings IV: Early 2017

Quick, before AOA makes their comeback! Too late? Okay, quick! Before I review their comeback! Here are my Girl Group Power Rankings going into the start of 2017. As per usual(?), the main components of each group I'll be look at are the quality of their music, consistency (both music-wise and promotion-wise), potential and talent. Stuff like chart placings, show winnings, variety appearances, and general popularity aren't as important to me, because if they don't have good music I don't really care how popular they are. But they do still play a factor, of course. The music factor will only be accounted for the period between the previous Power Ranking. So for this series, only content from around July was considered, but will also include anything I may have missed. Alright no more introductions, let's get cracking.

Honorable Mention: Girl's Day
* New Releases: N/A
Enough is enough. Girl's Day is the only group on this list that has not released anything in over a year. They can only go by on their legacy for so long. Thankfully they haven't reached After School-levels of a disappearing act, with members still being productive through acting adventures and variety show appearances. Hyeri is still making it rain and their ever-elusive comeback should help bring them back into the spotlight. They have plummeted from the #1 spot in September of 2015, but with a comeback in January, they'll look to go on a revenge tour for all the ranks they've dropped.

Honorable Mention: Red Velvet
* New Releases: Russian RouletteAlways In My Heart (Joy)
Red Velvet retain their Honorable Mention placing from the summer. This is mostly due to the ineffectiveness of "Russian Roulette," which in my eyes is their worst showing since their dreadful debut. It's still a solid C- song but that ain't quite good enough to push themselves into the top 10. Joy also had an opportunity with Station that she took full advantage of, which highlights one thing about Red Velvet that often goes underappreciated: they have solid voices from top to bottom. The duet with Seulong proves it. Better news / hype is that we should be slated for a Velvet comeback, which will have more soft tunes in store.

#10. Wonder Girls (--)
* New Releases: Why So Lonely
Wonder Girls aren't new to the #10 spot, which was their previous location back in fall of 2015. They had inhabited one of the Honorable Mention placings for most of last year but thanks to the wonderful "Why So Lonely" EP, they've managed to get back to this spot. Wonder Girls are extremely well-balanced. They have Yubin who is one of the best girl group rappers, Sunmi and Yeeun who are solid vocalists (with established material as individuals to boot), and a retro band theme that they own (when was the last time you saw a girl group band in Kpop). Dance is no longer their emphasis as it was back in the day but that's to be expected when everyone is playing instruments now.

[Blog] Kpop Hopes In 2017

Woah. My first post in 2017 will coincidentally be post #300 on the blog. That's pretty cool. Anyway, there are some writings I want to get to right away, but I also wanted to start off the year simple. Here's a blog post that will gloss over what are my hopeful wishes for Kpop in 2017. Like some of my other posts, these will range from somewhat realistic to "please I'd give up my left leg if this happens." I can think of no other way to kick off 2017 with these lighthearted thoughts.

[Bonus] 2016 Kpop Awards: Part II

Best Vocalist: Sandeul
Enough with the inequality. Boy group members deserve some love, too. Otherwise I'd have dropped Taeyeon here and called it a day. Anyway, I don't think there's a boy group vocalist that's as incredible as Sandeul. He and B1A4 are sort of mired in mediocrity as far as I know but he has deservedly gained attention for his talents over the years. Appearances on singing shows increased his popularity and his OST offers grew. And in 2016 we finally saw him get a solo debut with "Stay As You Are," which further illustrated his vocal abilities.

Best Rapper: Zico
Speaking of gender equality on my blog... I don't think I'll ever write Rapper Power Rankings for boy group members, but if I did, there's one name that would be the undisputed champion: Zico. His style and charisma flow deep in Block B's music, not to mention the individual contributions he makes to the composition and lyrics of songs. He's also one of the most prolific group soloists, too. This year was another excellent harvest for the young man, with songs like "I Am You, You Are Me" and "Bermuda Triangle" giving him solace whenever Block B ends, he will be extremely comfortable pursuing the solo path.

[Bonus] 2016 Kpop Awards: Part I

Welcome to the 2016 Kpop Awards! The exciting and prestigious event that dates all the way back to 2015. Most of the ideas have previously been used during the awards from last year, but I made sure to throw in a few new ones, too. The various categories will be related to group popularity and success, but I'm also invested in their consistency and potential heading into the new year. There are roughly 15 awards to look at so let's not waste anymore time. I originally didn't want to split the post into two parts but I'd rather have more manageable sections than one giant wall of text.
Best Girl Group: Twice
No more games, no more denial. Twice towered above the competition this year. Whether you're looking for the insanely popular "Cheer Up," or the Halloween-themed "TT," Twice did a perfect job solidifying their status at the top of the girl group ladder in 2016. Both songs were a massive upgrade to the disjointed feel of "Like Ooh-Ahh," and they have established staples between their catchy choreography and beautiful bridges. With such a large roster, they have personalities and appearances of a wide variety, which helps attract fans of all kinds. If anything, they should work on getting more variety starts in 2017. Other groups certainly were successful this year, but none of them have exploded quite like Twice did this year.

Best Boy Group: BTS
Hmm, what a familiar feeling. BTS won this award last year, and it may not come as a surprise to see them take it again. There's simply no other group with the efficiency and work ethic of BTS. They debuted in 2013, and have averaged 3.5 title tracks a year. That number only includes Korean releases, by the way. That is insane. Anyway, 2016 saw songs like "Fire," "Save Me," and "Blood, Sweat, & Tears" enjoy considerable success. Along with the "Wings" album, Suga also had solo work (despite the unfortunate usage of a stage name for his stage name). With Big Bang departing for military service, the difference between BTS and rival boy groups seem worlds apart.

[Bonus] Best Of 2016 (#8-#1)

#8. Big Bang - Last Dance
Big Bang's final hurrah came in the form of "Last Dance" and "Fxxk It." The latter was briefly mentioned in the recap piece, but the former is really the song worth talking about. Somber vocals from each member really set the tone for the song (and the year, to be honest). And then T.O.P started singing and it was beautiful. If nothing else, 2016 has proven that rappers deserve singing lines too! T.O.P and Yubin have made a statement with their voices. Also live performances of "Last Dance" are...interesting. Big Bang will leave us for military service on a good note in an illustrious career.

#7. Twice - Cheer Up
Only one girl group can claim to be the hottest in 2016. Twice dominated Youtube, hearts, and charts with "Cheer Up" and even their most stout critics were silenced by the success of "Cheer Up." This was a group finding their form: between the vocal leadership of Nayeon and Jihyo, the shared rap between Chaeyoung and Dahyun, and pretty bridges and aesthetics, this song (combined with "TT" later) cemented Twice's position as the best girl group of the year (oops, spoilers for the Kpop Awards). Throw in a fun choreography and dance break and this was Twice firing on all cylinders.

[Bonus] Best Of 2016 (#16-#9)

It's that time of the year again. I'll be breaking down my personal list of the best songs of 2016. Because I've run this theme before, there will be 16 songs if only to match the year. I don't have much time to waste - Best Of 2016 and the annual Kpop Awards need to be complete before the end of the year because January is already booked with comebacks. This year my list will be split between the top and bottom halves. Remember, this is my set, not yours! But definitely share which songs you think I missed out on.

#16. Brave Girls - Deepened
This song is the best slow dance track of 2016. Everything about it is sensual, which is reflected in both the singing and dancing. The vocals are soft and almost graceful, which is matched by the choreography. Hyeran's rap break was the best sequence of its kind this year, though unfortunately for her made her later appearances disappointing. Nonetheless this was a very complete song that helped bring Brave Girls back into relevancy. It almost made you forget that they had been inactive for three years before coming back.

#15. DAY6 - Letting Go
Nostalgia speaks to me strongly, and a group like Day6 is exactly what I'd have been obsessed about in my high school years. Rock is an old sweetheart of mine and these guys put their Kpop spin to it quite nicely. "Letting Go" is aptly named as the band had lost a member prior to release, and you can almost hear the emotional rift in their voices. I've yet to be sold on Younghyun's rapping, but perhaps that needs some time. After all, I've come to really enjoy rappers like Verbal Jint and Mad Clown and their unorthodox flow. Maybe Younghyun is next.

[Bonus] Girl Group Rapper Power Rankings III: Winter 2016 (#10-#1)

#10. Nada (+9)
Nada experiences a massive jump up the standings thanks to her berth and success on Unpretty Rapstar. The exposure was a much-needed jolt of life considering how inactive Wa$$up have been. Throw in her mixtape and she has plenty to add to her otherwise boring resume. Nada's definitely got a swagger and ferociousness that is uncommon in other rappers, and her rare lower voice makes her stand out even more. If Wa$$up could start gaining traction, she'll be the centerpiece of it, much like Yezi was with FIESTAR.

#9. Hyeran (--)
I'm not entirely confident placing Hyeran here as a newcomer to the rankings. At the same time, who else is truly deserving of being in the top 10 besides her? After Nada, she has the next fewest amount of great material, but conversely has impressed me in older variants of Brave Girls (like "Nowadays You"). With her group's revival came "Deepened" and 2016's best girl group rap break. Since then however, her parts in "High Heels" and "Yoohoo" haven't been as good, plus her and her group's future is once again in question.
