[Bonus] Best Of Sad Songs

You'll notice the title isn't "Best Of Ballads." While I'm surprised that isn't something I've ever written about, that's not the point. Not every ballad is a sad song, and not every sad song is a ballad. At least not in my book, though I predict many of the entries on this list will be ballads. Sad songs will help ruin the mood of any situation, induce tears, and make you gloomily sing along. Whether it's the vocals, the tune, lyrics, or music video, something (or everything) about these songs make them sad and a welcome addition to my sad_zone playlist.
#7. JYJ - In Heaven
One of the selling points of JYJ's early days was that their vocals were really damn good. Jaejoong and Yoochun provide excellent support to Junsu and this song shows exactly why. Just listen to Junsu in general, but also that last half of the song. The bridge is one of the best I've heard in any ballad or any song, it's simply that powerful. Meanwhile the music video is cute and will tug at your heartstrings for sure. Shoutouts to Jihyo for appearing in the MV, too.
#6. Big Bang - Last Dance
Pretty sure I've talked about this song before, but "Last Dance" is beautiful. Daesung and Taeyang lead the charge, but G-Dragon and Seungri aren't to be overlooked with their vocals either. "Last Dance" is a beautiful farewell even though it's not technically a farewell. When those opening notes come on it can ruin any happy vibes you've got going on. It's not sad in the traditional sense, but listening to it envelops me in an aura of somberness. Call me a gloomy individual if you wish, knock yourselves out.
#5. VIXX - Error
"Error" is an example of where the aesthetics of the music video nearly outshines the song itself. The whole cyborg theme is legit and if we're lucky we could have real cyborgs in our lifetimes. The vocals surprisingly don't have a lot of autotune (which to be honest maybe could've been excused if they were), though Hongbin does his best machine impression. Ravi pulls off one of the more memorable rap breaks in VIXX's discography, and the rest is history. Also, never forget N's supercharging moment at the beginning of the dance.
#4. Big Bang - Loser
If there was any one song in Kpop that could perfectly describe me, it's this one. I'm not even joking. I love singing with this song and it's because these lyrics are too fitting. I'm trash and this song expresses what it's like to be trash. The rapping is a little tough to follow but the prechorus and chorus are my favorite parts of the song and even the bridge has its moments. Whether I'm using "Loser" as karaoke material or my theme song, it always fits the bill.
#3. 2NE1 - Goodbye
In a similar vein to Big Bang's "Last Dance," 2NE1's "Goodbye" hurts right in the feels since this was the final release as 2NE1. Dara's excellent support, Bom's unique voice, and CL's consistency culminate in a beautiful farewell. Thankfully there was no rapping because while CL is good...well, I don't really need to get into that. The only way "Goodbye" could've been more painful was if Minzy took part in the song. That would have been the ultimate beautiful but sad ending for a legendary girl group.
#2. Huh Gak - It Hurts
Any Huh Gak song could do, but between this and "The Person Who Once Loved Me," one has satisfied their Huh Gak quota. His voice fluctuates between emotionally soft and surprisingly powerful, and the beginning and end of this song showcase those opposites. But the main selling point of "It Hurts" is obviously the music video, where the acting is a little awkward, but the plot can still sucker punch you. The fact that this and "The Person Who Once Loved Me" are tied together make the song and video for "It Hurts" even better.
#1. Davichi - Don't Say Goodbye
Nothing will ever be as emotionally devastating as "Don't Say Goodbye." Davichi are the queens of making you cry with their voices or videos, and this is the prime example of their abilities. Haeri and Minkyung are a delightful duo and this piece is one of many in their library that can move you to tears. Wrap their powerful voices with this music video, and you have the ultimate sad_zone song. As "Don't Say Goodbye" was one of my earliest Kpop discoveries, it'll always remain in my heart for years to come.
