[Bonus] Girl Group Subunit Theory

I'm finally on Thanksgiving break - which for some reason is an entire week this semester - but hey that means I have more time to kick back, relax, and do pointless writing. Today I'm going to list my five most desired subunits I'd like to see. The possibilities of these actually happening range from possible to ridiculous, but it's all for the fun thinking. I'm not going to come up with names for these theoretical subunits, because quite frankly name creativity is not my strongest suit, but I'll talk about each one and what I think they'd bring to the table.

Sistar: Hyorin and Soyu
Alright so it's not like Hyorin needs any more proof that she carries Sistar. But since Sistar19 seems to be buried under 200 feet of concrete, a new subunit could be sweet if nobody else from the group is to go solo. They are contrasting singers that could tackle almost any genre together, simply due to the greatness of Hyorin. Alternatively, you could ruin the lives of all Bora fans by making Soyu the main vocalist and Hyorin as the rapper. That would be awesome and disheartening at the same time.

Black Pink: Lisa and Jennie
This is the most ambitious pick, which is to be expected given this group debuted this year. Who knows how long it'd be until something like this happens, but you need the dynamic duo of Jennie and Lisa together. If this sounds familiar, that's because CL & Minzy once were a thing and we all know Black Pink as the successors to 2NE1. However, they have to not repeat their sunbae's mistakes and bring the subunit back more than once.

GFriend: Yuju, SinB and Eunha
Too many subunit ideas are really just duos, though that is because there simply aren't enough big groups to compose ideas from. Sure, there are groups like Cosmic Girls and Lovelyz, but I'm not too familiar with them yet. For now, the first trio will be from GFriend, who take a similar route to Girls' Generation's TTS subunit. These three girls are the most popular in their group (though Yerin makes a strong case) and also happen to be the most musically gifted. Sometimes subunits show that less is more, and this trio would be a good example of that.

f(x): Luna and Amber
While they've already released a song in "Wave" for Station, it'd be nice to see them get official love as f(x)'s first subunit. The LunBer ship has sailed strong over the years, and rightfully so as these two bring the most punch to f(x). Luna's piercing voice and Amber's incredible versatility allow them to promote a variety of styles not unlike what Hyorin and Soyu could do. Hopefully "Wave" is but a teaser for future works, to satisfy our minds until f(x) has a full comeback.

Girls' Generation: Yoona, Yuri, Seohyun
Clearly, this isn't the dream lineup we could've imagined after a certain fashion queen had to part ways, but it is the next best thing. We've already seen glimpses of what could be, with Yuri and Seohyun teaming up for a Station track that doubled as a hair product commercial, but throwing in Yoona as the iconic center would be the final move. Come to think of it, Yoona has showed through Station that her voice can be lively, too. S.M. can truly flex the might of Seohyun if she's in both Girls' Generation subunits.

All in all, subunits are a refreshing take on group's that we've become familiar with. Even if some may be more impressive than others, at the end of the day what we really want is for said subunits to show up mre than once in our lives. Too many of them have been in dormancy for too long. Dasoni, Sistar19, etc. Here's hoping that changes in 2017.
