What better way to get rolling in 2020 than with some tier lists? EXO featured in my pilot episode and now we have a conglomerate of Cube girl group members, both active and disbanded. The five members from 4minute, the seven members from CLC, and the six members from (G)I-DLE will compete to see who will take the inaugural tier list of the newest year. We shall start from the bottom and work our way up.
D Tier: Sohyun, Shuhua, Yujin
The inhabitants of D Tier all share something in common: they're the awkward member of their respective groups. Not only that, they're all the forgettable awkward members of each group. Compared to the other idols they seem the least settled in their roles and coincidentally provide the least vocal utility on average. I also thought that Yujin was the maknae of CLC for the longest time but she's straight up like the 3rd oldest. That's how lacking I find her presence... Shuhua only recently broke out of the whole "sing one syllable in every song" phase so she has the most potential to escape this tier, but Sohyun's long career with 4minute takes precedent for now.
C Tier: Miyeon, Gayoon, Jihyun, Sorn
Somehow a vocal trend continues into C Tier. Miyeon, Gayoon, and Sorn are all secondary vocalists within their groups and have hardly been shown at max potential. Miyeon's best work comes from the K/DA masterpiece while Gayoon and Sorn tend to just be pretty average (although I gotta pay respect to Gayoon's chilling head voice). Oh and Jihyun exists. Sorn's stupidity from a month ago puts her at the bottom, even below Jihyun.
B Tier: Eunbin, Seunghee, Minnie
Finally, an interesting assortment of players. Minnie's stock is rising after the premiere of "Lion," and has the best voice out of the Thai squad of idols. Seunghee should really be in C Tier, but I think that (a) she has been mismanaged in terms of her vocal ability the least and (b) CLC has been going nowhere but up over the last few releases. Combined with Eunbin's versatility (she's basically a second, weaker version of groupmate Seungyeon) and they comprise B Tier.
A Tier: Yeeun, Jiyoon, Elkie, Soojin
The representation per group has been pretty consistent across tiers and that continues near the top. 4minute's Jiyoon is a badass rapper with a solid singing voice that her post-group career has been focused on. Elkie and Soojin are about evenly matched when it comes to how much I like their voice, so in this case Elkie's home field advantage as a fellow Hong Konger helps her out here. Yeeun sits at the top of A Tier thanks to her flighty rap style which has not only impressed since her debut with "Pepe," but steadily improved with each subsequent comeback.
S Tier: Seungyeon, Hyuna, Soyeon, Yuqi
Absolutely no surprises here. These are the four best girls in Cube and they were the first tier completely assembled when creating the list. Yuqi has a distinct voice both speaking and singing that made everyone swoon when we first heard her in "Latata." Then we have the breadwinners of Cube's past and present. Hyuna is synonymous with success and has become a legend across many platforms, while Soyeon follows in her footsteps thanks to her explosive rapping capability. But the queen of all things here has to be Seungyeon. She's dangerously versatile between her looks, dancing ability, and surprisingly strong vocals. While she cannot possibly compare in the rapping department, she is extremely well-rounded elsewhere.
