- Sadly, this piece won't be published on a Friday night.
But this one will! Let's gooooo.
- Still, we're all waiting for Sonamoo to break out. Despite being the "successor" to Secret (who are still locked up in the dungeon by te way) they haven't really found their footing yet.
Time is but a flat circle because now it is Sonamoo's turn to be stuck in purgatory. They have done nothing since late 2017 outside of scarce promotional material. That was followed by the departures of Sumin and Nahyun. Unfortunately for fans, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Only despair, lack of content, and thoughts about what could have been if they were under a different agency.
- This one is a little harder hitting and thank god for that because the girls are better in this element. Also thank god what happens at 0:46 never shows up again.
Sonamoo have strong vocalists and rappers, so yeah getting away from the bubblegum pop sound would only do good things for them. The bullshit you hear at 0:46 is awful and any group that attempts similar things should be shunned.
- Backing them up is a groovy instrumental and pretty solid choreography. It's one of the rare dances that uses a lot of tutting which is neat. Could even see some silly rollerblades version working out.
Tutting has been a rare sighting in Kpop dances throughout its history, so always good to see something "new." If Sonamoo actually attempted a rollerblade variant of the choreography, that could've been something legendary. Similar to what GFriend recently did, but we'll get to that another time.
- I love how seamlessly Sonamoo uses Newsun and D.ana's rap breaks. They never seem forced and it's redeeming seeing them shine (I've not been a fan of their performances in their other songs).
D.ana and Newsun were slept on throughout their run. D.ana's voice is everything while Newsun has underrated flow. Really hope we get to hear something, anything, from them in the future. That's simply talent going to waste as it stands.
- They're dancing in water (which is cool) but unfortunately comes after GFriend's release where they did the same thing (not as cool).
Funny how the parallels or discussion between both these groups rare up again in modern day. GFriend is absolutely thriving under a new label while Sonamoo have been in the saddest zone.
- Supposedly there's another song in the works, so for now I'll enjoy this disco-loving song that puts Sonamoo back on the right path.
"Friday Night" was followed up on with "I (Knew It)" which was fantastic. Easily their best single of their limited discography. Repetitiveness aside, it really is a damn shame they went fucking nowhere after that beauty of a song.
