[Review] EXID - Me & You

Not sure exactly how the song name is supposed to be stylized but whatever. EXID are here for their final act, as Hani and Junghwa will be leaving Banana Culture. Sure the group might not be officially disbanded, but those two members are gonna be looking for new agencies, so the group will have some time before they reunite for more music. As another group bites the dust, we'll see how "Me & You" fares in the competition of closing performances.

This song is probably the closest thing we'll ever get to an "Every Night" sequel. Slower and sultrier with R&B overtones, "Me & You" relies on Hani, Hyerin and Solji (as always) to carry the verses and prechorus. When you consider that the chorus itself has minimal singing, this was to be expected.  Seriously, what is up with Kpop songs choosing to not sing in choruses? LE returns with another explosive pair of raps and will in all likelihood remain on the top of all girl group rappers with this final showing.

Junghwa was criminally underused for most of the song - and she would've done pretty well taking over for a prechorus line - and was stuck with leftovers of the bridge. This is a shame because she's made significant progress as a support vocalist over the years. I've quickly gotten tired of primarily English bridges (or large stretches of English in general), and I'm also not a fan of using the same line but substituting one English word for another in Korean. It's a poor attempt at making the bridge sound less repetitive. The neon aesthetic isn't fancy either, plus we've already seen Chungha try that.

I didn't know LE got injured prior to this MV being filmed because upon second viewing I noticed one girl was in white with the rest of EXID that was certainly not LE. That's pretty unfortunate but hey props to whoever the backup dancer is. She must feel pretty great getting to be a standin. The choreography is nothing spectacular. It does match the theme of the song in the sense that the moves are slower and more seductive, but none of the moves were particularly interesting save for the end stretch of the dance "break."
As far as swan songs go, "Me & You" is disappointingly pedestrian. The dance and vocals are well-suited for the direction the song goes, but neither of these are super exciting. Average showings from most members save for Junghwa being underutilized and LE being her usual dominant self. It will be enjoyed thanks to the legacy of EXID if this is indeed their last song as a unit (for however long), but I really think they could've done better. "Me & You" is the weakest goodbye song we've seen but at least it's better than nothing.
