Sulli - Goblin
June was kind of an average month for music (that interested me). Chungha's "Snapping" was the headliner so I'll use Sulli's unexpected song "Goblin" in its place. How fucking sad is it that Sulli released music before the rest of f(x) did. Probably as shocking as her lack of eyebrows in the music video. The song itself is alright but the message and theme about psychology and dissociative disorder is the more prominent aspect.
(G)I-DLE - Uh Oh
Not writing their name, not writing their name, not writing their name...dammit. I have to because "Uh Oh" is a solid old school hip-hop throwback and it's evident from the musical style, fashion choices, and video editing. Soyeon and Soojin are establishing themselves as the powerful 1-2 punch and pillars of the group in the same way that LE and Solji are (were?) for EXID. Another unorthodox rap from Soyeon but this one set the mic on fire and is more pleasing than the one from "Senorita." Yuqi's stylist needs to be fired. Also in the dance practice video there's a literal cube incorporated.
YG Loses YG
What a dumpster fire it's been for this label. You could say it's been a huge downward slide for a long time but 2019 was the pinnacle of despair. Seungri's shenanigans are well-chronicled by now and I'm not wasting space or effort talking about that scumbag. Then iKON joined the fun with the departure of their leader B.I. Seriously kids don't do drugs, especially not in Korea. I can visualize all those poor trainees wallowing in terror from the shitstorm they've witnessed. Safe to say that YG is no longer big anymore. This will be an interesting storyline to check back on in one year.
Heize - We Don't Talk Together (feat. Giriboy)
Part of me is mad that I missed opportunity to go see Heize in concert when she was so close in Boston, but the other part of me says that it was on a Sunday which makes life super difficult. Anyway, Heize working together with Suga and Giriboy to bring this number was much anticipated and for good reason. Funny how the song title contradicts what happened during production of this track. Heize is probably doing better than anyone else on Unpretty Rapstar combined, excluding those who were idols (and maybe even then).
Itzy Returns
One of the main headlines for the summer block is the return of Itzy. With YG in complete freefall, JYP and SM are now in the two-party race. Itzy disappointed me with the debut of "Dalla Dalla" so hopefully the sophomore release will sway my opinions on them. Their upcoming mini album has the ol' Black Pink treatment with the amount of remixes involved, and hopefully that isn't a sign of things to come.
