[Review] EXO-SC - What A Life

EXO are not very clever with their subunit names. There was EXO-K and EXO-M in the beginning, and after they merged back into one group they had EXO-CBX with initials for each member. Now we've got Sehun and Chanyeol making EXO-SC. Color me surprised because these are the two rappers in the gang, and I can't imagine they'd actually try their hand at serious rapping. That'd be disastrous... Chanyeol could hold his own but Sehun is a different story.

Ah, I see this is the child of "Kokobop." Possessing the summer vibe and similar instrumental, "What A Life" has a pretty safe foundation. The song itself isn't particularly memorable, as they spam the line "what a life" quite a lot throughout the course of the track. Chanyeol and Sehun are - as mentioned previously - rappers so any of their singing is simple and aided with autotune. There's nothing that stands out about this song other than being a "Kokobop" clone which is a shame. It's fun and fitting for the summer, but most importantly the song actually lets Sehun do something. Usually he gets the bottom of the barrel in full group comebacks. So despite all the shortcomings of "What A Life," I can appreciate that it gives Sehun a ton of love when he wouldn't normally get it.
This is glorious fanservice for fans of Sehun and Chanyeol, and sometimes that's okay. When a larger group has members that don't get the opportunity to stand at center, a subunit and song like this is a great service for both members and fans alike. It's not likely "What A Life" will find a way into my library, but like I said earlier, I appreciate the presence they gave Sehun and Chanyeol.
