[Review] Weki Meki - Tiki-Taka

I'm trying to give these lesser girl groups some love, ya feel? Two comebacks in three months will certainly help push me towards that agenda, so here's Weki Meki with another comeback with a tacky name. They've really yet to break out of their current tier and none of their releases have hooked me so we'll see if nth time is the charm for these girls.

After a first listen, "Tiki-Taka" is not bringing much to the table. August is halfway through so companies are trying to make the most out of the summertime they have left. This comeback is 100% stereotypical girl group summer dance track with zero adaptations. The song itself has nothing out of the ordinary even vocals-wise and each chorus is full of bizarre English phrases. What the hell is "tiki taka little more?" The alternate title of the song is "99%" so with that context I suppose that line makes some more sense (but does it really). Even the MV has the usual bright cheery outdoor concept in the first half followed by a darker "girls night out" outfit sequence in the second half. Yawn.

Yoojung's lack of rap really hurts this song. She is one of the parts of Weki Meki that help them standout from the crowd (the other being Doyeon's visuals) so removing that aspect seems like a strange decision. There was definitely room to slot in a rap like after the first chorus. Just seems strange to have a talent and not utilize it. There aren't many competent girl group rappers out there but Yoojung is at least that. Don't make her the newest version of Oh My Girl's Mimi, please.
Ehh. I can't fault them for trying, but Weki Meki continue to go by with average songs at best. Have they won a major award on music shows or anything yet? I'd be surprised if that was the case. They're definitely in the category of girl groups that are young and have potential, they (and their company) haven't realized it yet. Try again next time.
