[Bonus] The Late Report: October 2019

With this, a full year of Late Reports have been filed. I can safely say that I like this series' inclusion on the blog: it helps take any pressure off having to write multiple reviews frequently, is clean and easy to format and write, and is super resourceful when it comes to Best Of 20XX and any compilation posts. Very glad I decided to do something like this. Here's what caught my eyes and ears during the month of October.
Tiffany - Run For Your Life
It's been a hot minute since I paid attention to what the non-Taeyeon girls of SNSD are up to. Tiffany strikes fear into the hearts of fans with this freaky MV. Halloween came early with these music video because she's got some curious outfits and styling present in "Run For Your Life." Those distorted leg shots are unsettling to say the least. Everything visual appears inspired by the works of a young Lady Gaga, and so does some of the sound. In particular, the way the autotune (or whatever mixing is involved) and her pronunciation of "glitter" is what reminds of Gaga's older material.
Heize - Falling Leaves Are Beautiful
Heize releasing a relaxing seasonal track showing off her precious vocals? Next you'll be telling me that water is wet. She continues her streak of stellar releases and has never really slowed down since gaining traction off her Unpretty Rapstar days. Keep eatin' well Heize. And keep releasing sweet music while you're at it.
DAY6 - Sweet Chaos
Hoo boy this is a grim reminder that I've not written a post about their concert which I attended a month and a half ago...whoops. I'll decide if I'm gonna finish that or shelve it this weekend. On e hand this is super late and on the other hand I've written something about every concert I've attended. Anyway "Sweet Chaos" is not as chaotic as the title would imply. The fundamentals of kickass instruments and gorgeous harmonies during the chorus are very alive and well. Halfway through my first listen I got scared that Brian would be rapping but thankfully they didn't unleash that disaster upon us. What they did unleash was Thanos since they all got dusted during that bridge ha.
Double Departure
We could a double dose of group departures (ignoring the more obvious one...) in October with Monsta X's Wonho and Stray Kids' Woojin bowing out of their respective groups. Given that I'm not invested in either group, this sequence of news was surprising and out of nowhere. I'll have to do some digging to find out what's been going on with regards to each member. Woojin's case seems like a clean contract termination a la DAY6's Junhyeok (which was coincidentally early in their group career as well). Meanwhile Wonho's shenanigans look more shady involving an ex, debt, drugs, and is possibly tied to Burning Sun AKA the great Kpop disaster of 2019.
Sunny Hill - Nom Nom Nom
No bullshit from me: outside of "Midnight Circus," I have not listened to much Sunny Hill. So you can imagine my surprise when (a) they released a new song in 2019 after not hearing anything about them for years and (b) "Nom Nom Nom" is clearly a sister song to "Midnight Circus," eight years later. They were always a quirky bunch in terms of their music and videos, and this song was no exception. Apparently ex-Purfles member Geonhee is among their ranks now. I kinda wish free agency was more of a thing in Kpop, that make every comeback or possible disbandment / reform have potential to be exciting. Good to see an old name still floating around the music industry.
Brown Eyed Girls - Wonder Woman
Speaking of old legends, Brown Eyed Girls returned! It's a monumental moment even if "Wonder Woman" isn't that amazing of a track. How many groups are making comebacks in their late 30's? How many are still working together (at some point or another) 13 years after debut? Brown Eyed Girls are icons for young and old groups alike. The BEG vocals are as quality as ever but unfortunately they decided now was the time to give Miryo hot garbage for a rap. It's painful to listen to and supports the adage I've always held that I'd rather hear no rap at all than have a chance for a piss-poor rap like the one in "Wonder Woman." Hell I don't even know if I could call what Miryo does here a rap.
Big Bang Reunited...?
Last and with Seungri least, all the members of Big Bang have been discharged from the military or are very close to being so. Unlike most other male idols that are returning from enlistment, these guys get to come back to a complete and utter dumpster fire thanks to YG and his scumbaggery. G-Dragon and friends might wish they were still back in the military, honestly. It'll be interesting to see how they progress from here. Apparently GD has already announced a collaboration with Nike, so LeBron better watch the fuck out.
