#10. Love Whisper
Starting off the list is "Love Whisper." This song was very boring and their most bland since "Glass Bead." Considering the latter was a debut song, it gets away with being more simple in nature. "Love Whisper" on the other hand, came right after "Fingertip" so the disparity between the two was quite jarring. I understand the public didn't enjoy "Fingertip" as much but that's no reason for having such a lackluster song.
#9. Sunny Summer
The name of the game so far is "bland." These aren't bad songs per se, but they don't use much imagination and are even more cookie cutter than the MVs that accompany them. "Sunny Summer" is a stereotypical summer dance track through and through. Nice right now during the season, but will become forgettable rather quickly. Also hurting them is that this has to compete with the likes of Hyorin's "See Sea" and Lovelyz' "Wag-zak" which are both better summer jams.
#8. Summer Rain
With "Summer Rain," the summer trilogy concludes and all three songs rank at the bottom of the set. What "Summer Rain" has going for it is a more melancholy sound and the instrumental. It is still pedestrian as a whole, but since GFriend don't usually have sad songs as titles, it deserves to be the best of the worst we've seen so far. The bridge is also super pretty and helps elevate the song further against "Love Whisper" and "Sunny Summer."
#7. Glass Bead
You won't find "Glass Bead" in the hall of great debuts, but it is in the hall of solid debuts. 2015 was still doing well on the girl group front so another new cute group needed some power to stand out. Plenty of comparisons were made to Girls' Generation's "Into The New World" which was one of the best debuts out there so that's good company. Yuju immediately turned heads with her voice which was a sign of things to come.
#6. Me Gustas Tu
GFriend found fame through their second title track but that was more because of the choreography - and slippery footing from a single performance. Still, the song is more energetic and better overall than "Glass Bead." Cute groups rely on energy and catchy parts to reel the audiences in. "Me Gustas Tu" has both of those in spades. Eunha and Yuju dominated the vocals and the hook is memorable. Besides, as someone that speaks multiple language I appreciate them using English, Spanish, and Korean in one song.
#5. Time For The Moon Night
Originally I had this song lower, but in the same way that "Summer Rain" got a boost to the more melancholy atmosphere, so too does "Time For The Moon Night." Despite the awkward English title (what exactly is a moon night), this track has a more somber tone. The way the notes move in the chorus and bridge make this more serious than past hits. Yuju's climb into her magnificent high note is wondrous and she continues to show her power. I would say that after "Time For The Moon Night," we enter the upper echelon of GFriend's material.
#4. Fingertip
"Fingertip" combined the catchy nature of their pop tracks with unexpected power in the choreography, all wrapped together in a more mature sound. Had GFriend debuted with this kind of song they could've done even better throughout their young career. Of course that's my anti-aegyo philosophy speaking. All the same, "Fingertip" had more personality than other title tracks in both the song and video - not to mention this was arguably peak visual for GFriend as a unit. Why this song wasn't as well-received as it should have been is beyond me.
#3. Rainbow
Plenty of groups and albums have songs that deserved to be title track material. The fact that choreography exists for "Rainbow" and given how meh "Summer Rain" and "Love Whisper" were leads me to believe this was slated for title track stardom before whatever changed their label's minds. This is a traditional GFriend song with an uplifting beat and message (despite the clunkiness of Eunha saying "nothing is impossible" during the chorus). Yuju is once again brilliant during the bridge and the absence of an awkward faux-rap a la "Fingertip" boosts "Rainbow" to #3.
#2. Rough
"Rough" is the finest of the opening trilogy from GFriend and for good reason. The song maxes out on everything we had seen from them up to that point. The energy is amazing, the instrumental is beautiful and the vocals continued to improve with each release. Perhaps not surprisingly, this is also Yuju's finest moment in her young career with those glorious high notes. But that's not even the best part of the song. What pushes "Rough" to the next level is the choreography: it's their best to date (yes even compared to #1) and I'm willing to bet if you compiled how many GFriend covers are out there, "Rough" tops the list.
#1. Navillera
Naturally, the 3rd best song of 2016 is GFriend's best song ever. Even if "Rough" deserved to make the 2015 list, there's no way it'd have toppled the big three that year. Anyway "Navillera" amazing in the same way its English name makes no sense. The instrumental literally goes everywhere without sounding messy and we've not seen a GFreind track with as much power across the board since. The choreography can't quite compete with that of "Rough" but it's certainly one of their top three. With "Navillera" GFriend made a breakthrough and we'll see if they ever return to this form again in the future.
